Viritech’s revolutionary DC-DC Convertor selected for APC stand at Cenex LCV 2022
Viritech, the leading developer of enabling technology for fuel-cell powertrains, exhibited a major breakthrough.
Unitary DC-DC Convertor significantly reduces cost and size of FCEV power electronics.
Part of Viritech’s unique Tri-Volt™ architecture, which radically increases FCEV efficiency and reduces powertrain mass.
Viritech is delighted that its breakthrough power electronics technology was selected for exhibition on the Advanced Propulsion Stand at Cenex LCV 2022 at Millbrook on 7/8 September 2022.
Whereas current fuel-cell vehicles use two separate DC-DC Convertors for the fuel cell and the battery pack, the Viritech solution combines them into a single unit.
Viritech’s unique design uses an HV bus to connect the fuel cell, battery pack and traction motor. This integrates the components into a single architecture, and removes the need to have separate DC-DC convertors for the fuel cell and the battery pack. The Viritech DC-DC Convertor is a state-of-the art Silicon Carbide design with an exceptionally powerful CPU capable of managing the constantly varying voltage and power demands of a dynamic system.
Having a single DC-DC Convertor enables major savings in terms of both packaging and cost.
The unitary DC-DC Convertor is a cornerstone of Viritech’s Tri-Volt™ technology. Tri-Volt™ creates a dynamic energy system in which the fuel cell is the primary energy source, with batteries providing power for transient conditions (e.g. pulling away from rest). Both the fuel cell and the battery can operate together to provide maximum power for overtaking, climbing steep gradients etc.
Uniquely, Tri-Volt™ can continually vary both the energy split between the fuel cell and the battery, and the amount of total power deployed.
Timothy Lyons, CEO of Viritech said,” We are delighted to have exhibited our ground-breaking technology on the APC stand. APC’s TDAP programme is helping to accelerate the development and production of our revolutionary powertrains, and fulfil our vision of Sustainable Transportation, Without Compromise.”

About Viritech
Viritech are passionate cleantech engineers with the goal of becoming the world’s leading developer of hydrogen powertrain solutions for the automotive, aerospace, marine and distributed power industries.
Initially focussing on areas where hydrogen fuel cells offer immediate benefits, the company is developing hydrogen powertrains for high-performance vehicles, heavy transport, aircraft, marine and off-grid energy following the steep development curve enjoyed by batteries in the last 15 years.
With an F1-derived engineering culture, focussed on agile innovation and the creation of valuable, licensable IP, Viritech’s business model is to design, prototype, test and license its technologies to global OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
The Apricale® hypercar is the starting point for Viritech’s development programme, from which a family of powertrain solutions and other proprietary technologies will flow, including vehicle control systems and structural pressure vessels.
