When we started Viritech just under a year ago we knew that Hydrogen was a critical piece of the zero emissions puzzle. We also knew that over time Hydrogen would be recognised and commonly understood as the future fuel on the road to net zero.

Hydrogen as a source of sustainable energy is talked about in technical circles but hasn’t captured the consumer’s imagination in the same way as lithium-ion batteries. It doesn’t get the same attention in the general press. Shame, because it is a key piece in the net zero emissions puzzle. It’s actually something to get pretty excited about.

For heavy vehicles, the biggest problem with battery power is so-called “mass compounding”. This refers to the fact that, as batteries get bigger and heavier, more of the battery’s energy is used simply to move the vehicle’s additional weight due to the battery.

As the world becomes more and more dependent on lithium, we have to get smarter about how we use it.

Take the example of the F150 truck - a Viritech hydrogen powertrain would require a lithium battery weighing just 240 lbs (rather than the 1,800 lbs battery currently used), reducing the amount of lithium by 87% - enough battery power to build 260 e-bikes.
